Living Root Bridge of Meghalaya has been included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites Tentative List. These bridges are mostly found in East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hill districts. Locally known as 'Jingkieng Jri" is a combination of art and engineering.
Living root bridges are created by connecting trees on both sides of a stream or river. Over time, the roots from each side build a living bridge that connects both banks.
Presently Meghalaya has more than 100 such bridges. Some of these bridges are 100 feet long. These are the perfect example of using natural resources without creating a negative environmental impact.
A UNESCO World Heritage tentative list is an inventory of extraordinary cultural and natural heritage properties which each state party wants to be considered for nomination.
